The NPP calls on judges to oppose efforts to remove the Chief Justice.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has urged Ghana’s judges to unite and oppose what he called politically motivated attempts to unseat Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Recent events suggest that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership is attempting to politicise the court, the Efutu MP said.

He made this statement during a press conference held on Wednesday, April 16, after the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

It is incorrect to view the judiciary as a component of our nation’s partisan political structure. To administer justice, we only require an unbiased judiciary. “What is taking place is intolerable, and it is evident that the NDC government intends to partisanize the judiciary,” he stated.
Judges nationwide were urged by Mr. Afenyo-Markin to “stand together and resist” what he called a planned attempt to remove the Chief Justice under dubious grounds.
He also called on the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to speak out against the situation.

The hearing of an injunction motion contesting the process started by President John Mahama that can result in the Chief Justice’s dismissal has been postponed by the Supreme Court.

Following a motion submitted by solicitors attempting to halt the current procedure, the court decided to reschedule the hearing for May 6.
