John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) presidential candidate for 2024, has informed President Nana Akufo-Addo that it is his duty to handle the problem of illicit mining, also referred to as “galamsey,” while he is still in power.

Mr. Mahama reminded the President that Ghanaians had chosen him to address urgent problems facing the nation, such as illicit mining.

“You have a duty to address galamsey as the president of Ghana at this time,” he stated.

During his three-day trip of the Greater Accra Region, he spoke at a rally in Ningo Prampram and gave the people his word that, if elected in 2025, he would take full responsibility and deal with the threat.

“I am aware that after I am elected President of Ghana on January 7, 2025, I will assume that role and we will handle illegal mining from there,” he continued.

In reaction to President Akufo-Addo’s recent statement, which urged him to clarify his stance on the fight against malaria, Mr. Mahama made these remarks.

Given that the President has discussed the matter extensively on several forums, Mr. Mahama implied in his speech that the President may not be entirely aware of his position.

I have repeatedly commented on Galamsey, therefore it appears that he does not reside in this nation.

Political leaders were given a platform by the University of Energy and Natural Resources to present their small-scale mining policies. I talked about NDC’s policies for an hour, and then there were questions and answers for two more hours,” he said.

The presidential contender added that in recent talks with clergy, he had also discussed the galamsey issue.

I have said a lot about galamsey, so to speak. Thus, President Akufo-Addo need to instruct his media staff to obtain a recording of his remarks made at the University of Energy and Natural Resources for him to review,” he declared.
