Kufuor tells Bagbin: Take charge; the current impasse in parliament is humiliating
In light of the current impasse in Parliament over majority seating arrangements, former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Speaker of the House Alban Sumana Bagbin to demonstrate strong leadership.
Kufuor was disappointed by the state of affairs, calling the standoff a “embarrassing” one that could damage Bagbin’s otherwise stellar career.
The Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Bagbin’s previous order to declare four parliamentary seats vacant is the cause of the impasse. While members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are clinging to Bagbin’s decision, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disagree with it.
The NDC now holds the majority of the parliamentarians after Bagbin’s decision effectively tipped the scales of power in the house in their favour.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Kufuor urged Speaker Bagbin to put stability and decorum in the House first and highlighted the significance of his role in breaking the impasse.
He cautioned that if nothing is done, the existing state of affairs may harm Bagbin’s reputation and diminish his political contributions to Ghana.
