Two alcoholic beverages, Jupiter 1990 and Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur, have been declared dangerous for public consumption by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
Both drinks are unregistered and have tested positive for marijuana (cannabis) extracts, the FDA said in a statement issued on Sunday, May 18. FAMUDE Catering Services, based in the Ashanti Region, is suspected of producing them illegally.

The FDA first registered Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur in 2022. However, regular inspections and lab testing in July 2023 discovered marijuana residues in the beverage, according to the statement.
The FDA thereupon closed FAMUDE’s facility, cancelled its licence, and forwarded the matter to the Suntresu District Police for additional action.

Notwithstanding these actions, the FDA stated that it was still keeping an eye on the situation with assistance from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Ghana Police Service.

The Authority learnt in April 2025 that Koforidua was still selling Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur. A new, unlicensed production location was found as a result of investigations.

A combined FDA, NACOC, and DLEU team raided the illicit location at Jachie Abidjan Nkwanta on April 30, 2025. The FDA revealed that they discovered bags and packages of dried marijuana, labels for Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur, and another unregistered product known as Jupiter 1990.

The presence of marijuana extracts in both beverages was verified by laboratory testing. The police received all of the confiscated goods to aid in their ongoing investigations.

It is believed that Jupiter 1990 and Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur were manufactured covertly and combined with marijuana. As a result, they are dangerous to eat,” the FDA said.

All distributors and retailers have been instructed by the Authority to immediately cease selling the drinks and to return any leftover inventory to the closest FDA office. Additionally, it advised people not to purchase or consume these drinks in any way.
The FDA warned that consuming such dangerous alcoholic beverages can have a major negative impact on your health, including permanently damaging organs like the kidneys and liver.

The FDA reiterated its dedication to protecting the public’s health and guaranteeing that all food and drink items sold are high-quality, safe, and subject to strict regulations.

The public is urged to contact the FDA via its proper channels with any questions or to report product sightings.
