If Afenyo-Markin doesn’t apologise to Clerk Bernard Ahiafor, he will be subject to the Privileges Committee.

Bernard Ahiafor, the chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, has threatened to report the Minority to the Privileges Committee if he does not offer the Clerk of Parliament’s Appointments Committee an unconditional apology.
During a live-streamed outburst, Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused Gifty Jiagge-Gobah of being partisan. He repeated this accusation in several news conferences and interviews with the media.
She was working for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he claimed.
His comments reportedly sparked a fight among committee members, which led to the vetting process being stopped that day.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin responded to the chaos by ordering the Clerk to file a formal complaint with the police and suspending four MPs.
In an interview with PM Express on Monday, the Adaklu MP gave an update on the incident, calling Afenyo-Markin’s attack on Jiagge-Gobah “very reckless, very needless, and uncalled for.”
“A Member of Parliament cannot behave in that manner,” the Akatsi South MP added, adding that the issue is far from resolved.
He disclosed that Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s actions would be brought before the Privileges Committee, where he would be subject to harsh penalties if he does not accept the chance to apologise.
“Yes, he ought to apologise to the Committee Clerk along with me. It won’t be necessary to refer him to Privileges if he seizes the chance.
“We’ll follow the rules and enforce whatever is applicable if he doesn’t do so,” Ahiafor said.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin will have an opportunity to apologise and settle the issue amicably in the days ahead. But if he doesn’t, the disciplinary action will start.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has criticised Speaker Bagbin for acting autocratically by suspending three of its MPs, has firmly backed Afenyo-Markin despite the scandal.
The party has declared the action intolerable, claiming it compromises its capacity to hold the administration responsible.
In the meantime, the Appointments Committee will soon meet again to review the deputy ministerial candidates that President John Mahama is anticipated to unveil in the days ahead.
