EOCO freed Chairman Wontumi after he complied with bail requirements.

Following his successful completion of his bail requirements, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
In an interview with the media on the evening of Monday, June 2, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua confirmed his release.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong of the NPP, who supplied one of the sureties for Chairman Wontumi’s release, was congratulated by him.

Following his detention on Tuesday, May 27, Chairman Wontumi was given GH₵50 million bail with two sureties to be justified. This was in relation to continuing investigations into allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial harm to the state.

According to Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney-General, the charges also include a possible connection to a larger global organised crime network.

It has come to light that, in addition to the existing EOCO and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) investigations into Chairman Wuntomi’s conduct, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is also putting together its own docket.

After a period of strong political pressure and legal wrangling, he was released.
Days of detention resulted from Wontumi’s legal team’s initial struggles to achieve the high bond requirements.

Even though Wontumi complied with the bail requirements on Friday, an unforeseen “legal challenge”—an application to request a review of the bail requirements—delayed his release.

By Monday, June 2, his solicitors hoped this obstacle would be overcome.

In order to facilitate his release, the application has since been withdrawn.

The issue received a lot of political attention during his incarceration, with NPP lawmakers, party leaders, and numerous supporters holding demonstrations and calling for his release, calling the bond requirements disproportionate and politically driven.

The applicant changed their mind on Monday and withdrew the motion from the court completely. The hearing for the application to revise the bail terms was originally set for June 3, 2025.

As part of his bail conditions, Chairman Wontumi is expected to participate fully with the continuing investigation while he is free.
