As Ghana prepares to hold its eagerly awaited general election to choose a president and 276 lawmakers, voting has begun nationwide.
With 12 people running for president, many consider this election to be among the most contested in Ghana’s history.

The front-runners, former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), have both conducted strong campaigns.

The makeup of Ghana’s 276-member parliament will also be decided by the election.
Long lines have formed at polling places since they opened at 7:00 AM as voters enthusiastically cast their ballots.
