Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor Accuses Government of Politicizing Galamsey Crisis – Ghana News Online

At Asumenya, near Manso Nkran in the Ashanti region, three employees of Multimedia Group Limited, among them Erastus Asare Donkor, have been attacked by armed men posing as employees of Edelmetallum Resources Limited, a mining site.
They were attacked by more than ten burly men with pump action weapons; they forced them to drive them somewhere, where they were severely beaten and left.

Another wave of devastation has just struck portions of the recently restored Asenanyo Forest Reserve.

There is additional pollution in the streams that go into the Ankobra River. The Manso Edubia police station has received an official complaint, which will be investigated in order to take appropriate action.

Award-winning journalist Erastus Asare Donkor is well-known for his advocacy against illicit mining and environmental destruction in all its manifestations.

He’s won multiple awards for his environmental protection work.

The government has brought the once-dormant “Operation Halt” back into action to safeguard water bodies, suggesting that it has redoubled its efforts to combat unlawful mining, especially on water bodies.

The more than 100 soldiers sent in have so far destroyed a number of mining machines and made a few arrests, but some experts think this previously utilised strategy may not be sufficient to combat the threat of illicit mining.
