In an event-filled contest at the Bernabeu, Arsenal defeated Real Madrid to advance to the Champions League semi-finals, with Bukayo Saka scoring a goal and missing a penalty.

After their incredible triumph in the first leg last week, Arsenal had a 3-0 aggregate advantage to defend. They were given the opportunity to quiet the boisterous home crowd when they were given a penalty in the 13th minute.

Saka stepped forward, but Thibaut Courtois saved his feeble, chipped attempt.

But after Mikel Merino’s deft ball, the England attacker made up for his blunder by successfully ending the match with a spectacular chipped second-half finish over Courtois.

Two minutes later, Real responded when Vinicius Junior scored an open goal after a horrible error by William Saliba.

Gabriel Martinelli completed a fantastic evening by making it 2-1 in stoppage time with a breakaway goal, again set up by Merino, but Real Madrid was unable to capitalise on that glimmer of hope.

Arsena has advanced to the Champions League semifinals for just the third time, and they will play Paris St-Germain in the round of four.

Shortly after Saka’s missed penalty kick, the home supporters, who had created a fantastic atmosphere and were hoping to ignite a comeback that would be remembered for years to come, believed their team had a way back into the match when they were given a penalty of their own.

However, Kylian Mbappe had thrown himself to the ground after Declan Rice had barely touched him, and a long check with the video assistant referee overruled the referee’s ruling.
