We will not tolerate the misuse of authority – NDC over the EC’s disqualification of Amenfi Central PC

Ghana card surest way to ensure voter roll integrity' – Jean Mensa

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to contest the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to disqualify its parliamentary candidate, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, in court and other public forums. The party has denounced the action.
The General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, referred to the EC’s action as “an abuse of power” and said it was a part of a larger pattern of misbehaviour meant to weaken democracy during a news briefing on Thursday, October 17.

Asserting that the disqualification violates their candidate’s rights, the people’s will, and the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process, he promised that the party would challenge the ruling on several fronts.

This decision is not going to be approved. We intend to combat it not just in the legal system but also in public spaces and any other venue at our disposal. We won’t stand by while this misuse of authority continues,” he declared.
Following a claim that there is a pending order of interlocutory injunction preventing the Commission from recognising Mrs. Cudjoe as the party’s parliamentary candidate, EC disqualified Joana Cudjoe from competing as an NDC candidate in the Amenfi Central constituency in the Western Region.

“The people of Ghana must not be fooled. The disqualification of Madam Joana Gyan Cudjoe is part of a broader pattern of misconduct by an Electoral Commission that has shown time and again that it is unfit to referee the democratic process,” he asserted.

The party argued that from the SALL incident to Amenfi Central, the EC’s actions indicate a deliberate attempt to manipulate the democratic process.

Mr. Kwetey compared this episode to the contentious disenfranchisement of the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) constituency in the 2020 elections, pointing out that this is not the first time the Jean Mensa-led EC has acted with such reckless disrespect for democracy.
The Ghanaian people should not be duped. He claimed that the disqualification of Madam Joana Gyan Cudjoe was a part of a larger pattern of wrongdoing by the Election Commission, which has repeatedly demonstrated that it is unsuited to oversee the democratic process.

The party contended that the EC’s actions, ranging from the SALL incident to Amenfi Central, show a purposeful attempt to stifle democratic opposition.

“These actions indicate a dangerous intent to rig elections through administrative and legal subterfuge, rather than through the ballot box.”

“This latest travesty must not be allowed to stand,” he continued. Should we fail to halt the EC immediately, tomorrow your representative, your constituency, and your ability to vote might be taken away from you.
