Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, has demanded that three important individuals be taken into custody right away for the disappearance of more than 1,300 containers that belonged to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port.
Concern has been raised by the missing containers, which held essential electrical equipment intended for the country’s power distribution.
In a March 31 interview with Citi FM, Mr. Gbande explicitly called for the arrest of former ECG Board Chairman Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and former ECG CEO Samuel Dubik Mahama.
He maintained that these people need to answer for their involvement in the purported scam, which has sparked severe concerns about procurement irregularities and poor management in the electricity industry.
An investigative report that uncovered questionable transactions and anomalies in ECG’s procurement procedures was the catalyst for the initial controversy.
It has been claimed that several government representatives and ECG executives knew the containers were being handled improperly but did nothing about it.
According to Mr. Gbande, the loss of such important equipment is intolerable and calls for immediate action.
Mr. Gbande expressed his dissatisfaction and emphasised that those involved must not be let to avoid accountability.
He claimed that since Afenyo-Markin, the chairman of the board, now wants to avoid accountability, it is best for the nation if he is taken into custody right soon.
“We cannot tolerate these cases of corruption any longer, and it is time for us to take action,” he added, demanding for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Mahama, and Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
